Afrobeats star David Adeleke, known professionally as Davido, engaged in a heated exchange on X with former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad on Thursday over the upcoming Osun State governorship election.
The dispute began after Davido posted about witnessing a telephone conversation between President Bola Tinubu and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is the singer’s uncle. Davido described the moment as historic.
Ahmad responded by bookmarking the post, writing that it would serve as a reference point if the August 15 election results did not favor Davido’s camp. “I know you will come back here to lament if the August 15 results don’t go your way,” Ahmad stated.
Davido fired back by referencing Ahmad’s performance in the All Progressives Congress primary election. “You got 16 votes, bro, in the primaries. STFU,” the musician wrote.
In a subsequent post, Davido expanded his criticism, contrasting his entertainment career achievements with Ahmad’s political record. He cited sold-out arenas, billions of streams, and global influence as his metrics of success. Davido alleged that despite serving eight years in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, Ahmad failed to improve conditions in his community or secure significant support in his constituency during the primaries.
“You’re a small boy who came into politics by accident,” Davido wrote. “You spent 8yrs with the ex-president and couldn’t make a change in your poverty-stricken community. We all have different trophies, Bashir. I’ll keep inspiring the young ones and generations to come while you wait for the next government job to get crumbs.”
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between entertainment figures and political operatives in Nigeria’s public discourse, particularly around electoral cycles. Both men command significant followings on social media, where such confrontations frequently amplify ahead of major Elections.
The Osun State governorship election remains scheduled for August 15, with the incumbent governor seeking re-election.
