Liberia Suspends Passport Regulations, Requires Return of Certain Passports

Liberia Implements New Passport Regulations for National Security

In a bold move to address national security concerns, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti of Liberia announced significant changes to the country’s passport regulations. Effective immediately, individuals holding Diplomatic, Official, and Service passports with a validity exceeding two years must return them to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by April 18, 2024.

Speaking at a press briefing in Monrovia, Minister Nyanti emphasized the importance of reinstating the March 2016 Passport Regulations while suspending the Revised Passport Regulations introduced in July 2023. She highlighted that all Liberian citizens and non-Liberians ineligible for the aforementioned passports must also return their documents, with failure to comply resulting in immediate cancellation.

The Minister stressed that those found with multiple passports will have the extras revoked, unless they can provide valid reasons for holding them. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will cover the replacement costs for eligible individuals, with those residing abroad instructed to visit the nearest Liberian embassy or consulate for assistance.

While acknowledging potential inconveniences, Minister Nyanti underscored the necessity of these measures for national security. She urged cooperation from all citizens and residents to ensure a smooth transition and safeguard the integrity of Liberia’s passport system.

The government’s proactive stance on security challenges reflects its commitment to enhancing border security and maintaining national interests. Minister Nyanti reassured the public of the government’s support throughout the passport replacement process, emphasizing the importance of compliance to avoid travel complications.

As Liberia takes steps to strengthen its security measures, the Minister of Foreign Affairs remains dedicated to ensuring a secure and efficient passport system for all citizens.
