A tragic accident in Kenya has left 11 students from Kenyatta University dead and 42 seriously injured after their bus collided with a truck on a rainy highway. The students were on their way to Mombasa when the accident occurred at Maungu, 360 kilometers from Nairobi.
According to police reports, the driver of the university bus was overtaking other vehicles in heavy rain, causing the bus to skid and collide with the truck. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital in Voi for treatment.
Kenyatta University expressed deep sadness over the incident and set up a help desk to support those affected. Some of the injured students may be evacuated to Nairobi for further treatment.
Road accidents are unfortunately common in Kenya due to poor road conditions and disregard for traffic regulations. In 2023, over 4,000 people were killed and nearly 19,000 injured in road accidents in the country. The beginning of 2024 has been particularly deadly, with a rise in fatalities compared to the previous year.
This tragic incident adds to a string of recent accidents in Kenya, including the death of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and a van collision that claimed five lives. Just days before this accident, a high school student and a teacher lost their lives in a bus crash.
The National Transport and Safety Authority is working to improve road safety in Kenya, but more needs to be done to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time.
