Paul Onuachu will have to wait until next week before making his debut for his new Premier League club, Southampton. The Saints are set to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, but Onuachu, who joined from Belgian Pro League side KRC Genk on deadline day, cannot play because he has not yet been granted a work permit by the British Home Office, according to Complete Sports.
Alongside Onuachu, Ghanaian midfielder Kamaldeen Sulemana also completed a deadline‑day move to Southampton. Manager Nathan Jones confirmed that neither player is available for selection against Brentford. “They’re in the building but we’re limited with what we can do with them because of the work permit situation,” Jones told reporters. “You’re better off ringing the Home Office to find out. We can keep asking but until we get clarification on their work permits, neither will be involved.”
Southampton currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table. Reports indicate that the Nigerian forward signed a three‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the struggling club for a £15.8 million fee plus add‑ons. Onuachu had also been linked with Everton, who were given an opportunity to sign him after Southampton’s initial offer was rejected by Genk before the deadline.
