Eunice Dwumfour, a 30‑year‑old Republican councilwoman from Sayreville, New Jersey, was fatally shot outside her home on Wednesday night. She was married to Nigeria‑based pastor Eze Kings, according to the Foundation for Investigative Journalism. The New York Post reported that Dwampfour was struck by approximately 12 gunshots from an unidentified assailant while driving on Check Avenue toward Samuel Circle around 7:15 p.m. Her white Nissan SUV crashed into two parked cars, including a witness’s black Lexus GS350, before coming to a stop.
A male witness, who asked to remain anonymous, described seeing Dwumfour’s body slumped over the wheel, wearing a black hoodie with brown fur covering her head. He noted a bullet hole in the passenger door and multiple holes in the driver’s door. Other neighbors reported seeing a masked individual fleeing the scene, possibly heading toward the Garden State Parkway. Later, about 20 Sayreville police officers were seen searching the exit ramp near the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area.
Snapchat footage captured the aftermath, showing first responders surrounding the vehicle. Investigators later said video evidence showed Dwumfour speaking to the shooter moments before she was killed, suggesting she was the intended target, though no motive has been identified. Dog groomer Kristen Glanforf, a resident of Check Avenue, recalled hearing several shots, dropping everything, and running to her apartment as a car rolled down the hill with its lights on and doors open.
Community organizer Charlie Kratovil posted video of the SUV being towed and called the loss “huge” for Sayreville, describing Dwumfour as a kind person and public servant. Dwumfour had served on the borough council since November 2021, when she defeated an incumbent Democrat in a surprise election; she was not up for reelection until 2024.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he was “stunned” by the councilwoman’s death, praising her dedication and diligence in public service and extending condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and the Sayreville community. Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick also expressed shock and sadness, calling Dwumfour a dedicated council member whose murder by a “despicable criminal act” made the incident all the more horrifying.
