The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the upcoming Labour Party (LP) National Convention set for March 27, 2024.
In a letter addressed to Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC, the NLC, through their solicitors Falana and Falana’s Chambers, raised concerns about the legality of the convention organized by LP Chairman Julius Abure and his associates. The NLC pointed out that court rulings have declared the status of the LP and mandated inclusive conventions, making the planned convention illegal.
Signed by Marshal Abubakar, the letter titled “Request To Desist From Validating The Illegal Labour Party National Convention Scheduled For March 27, 2024,” emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting court judgments. The NLC threatened legal action if INEC proceeded to validate the convention.
The NLC highlighted previous court cases, including Suit no. FHC/ABJ/CS/866/2014 and Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/491/2021, which underscored the need for inclusive conventions within the LP. The Federal High Court had issued orders to maintain the status quo and prevent any actions that could disrupt the legal proceedings.
The NLC urged INEC to refrain from supporting the illegal convention and warned of potential contempt proceedings if their demands were not met promptly.
This development raises questions about the integrity of political processes in Nigeria and the importance of upholding court decisions in the democratic system. The NLC’s stance reflects a commitment to transparency and adherence to legal principles in the country’s political landscape.
