Borno Blasts: Minister Idris Urges Calm, Govt Vows Security

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for national calm following recent bomb explosions in Maiduguri, Borno State, pledging that the Federal Government is prioritising enhanced security measures nationwide.

Speaking after Jumaat prayer at Yahaya Road Mosque in Kaduna on Friday, Minister Idris expressed deep concern over the multiple blasts in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. He stated the government is working diligently to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. “We have witnessed what has happened, especially in Borno state. We pray to Allah to make this be the last one, as government is working seriously to ensure that there is no repeat of that kind of incidents,” he said.

The minister urged collective action and prayer, emphasizing that overcoming the nation’s challenges requires unity among all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation. He linked this call to the message of President Bola Tinubu, who has encouraged citizens to internalise the lessons and virtues of Ramadan beyond the holy month. “It is important for all of us to take the lessons of Ramadan and ensure that we pray for our country, leaders, and all the people of Nigeria so that we can have a prosperous Nigeria beyond our expectation,” Idris added.

He further highlighted Nigeria’s growing international respect, attributing this to the challenging but necessary reforms instituted by President Tinubu, which are designed for the broad benefit of citizens. “Nigeria is indeed taking its rightful place. The country is respected more than ever before on the international scene,” he noted, calling for national unity to complement this external standing.

In a related development, Garba Ibrahim, Chairman of Yahaya Road Mosque, urged Muslim worshippers to embody discipline, honesty, and God-consciousness as taught in Islamic tradition. He stressed the importance of adhering to religious obligations to build a lasting legacy for future generations, reflecting on how community members who previously participated in Eid prayers are no longer present.

The minister’s remarks come amid ongoing security operations in Nigeria’s northeast, where Borno State remains a hotspot for activities by the extremist group Boko Haram. His appeal underscores the government’s dual focus on immediate security responses and long-term national cohesion through moral and spiritual reaffirmation, particularly within the context of the ongoing Ramadan period.
