Kenneth Okonkwo, the renowned actor known for his role as Andy Okeke in the Nollywood classic “Living in Bondage,” has made a significant shift in his career trajectory. With over 30 years of experience in the film industry, Okonkwo has transitioned into the realm of politics, serving as a spokesperson for the Peter Obi campaign in the upcoming 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.

In a recent interview on the Mic On podcast, Okonkwo expressed his commitment to saving Nigeria from ruin through his political endeavors. He emphasized that his involvement in politics and other interests has led him to step back from his acting career. Despite his success and fortune in Nollywood, Okonkwo has made a conscious decision to prioritize his efforts towards building a better Nigeria, stating, “I’ve seen roles and turned them down, there’s no time anymore for it (acting).”

While Okonkwo’s focus has shifted towards politics, he clarified that this does not mark the end of his involvement in the film industry. The 55-year-old actor highlighted that a part of him will always remain connected to Nollywood, suggesting possibilities such as establishing a film school or becoming an executive producer.

One striking condition for Okonkwo’s return to acting is if Nigeria surpasses the United States in terms of development and progress. He firmly believes in Nigeria’s potential, stating, “The possibility is there because we have all it takes — men, materials, money.” Okonkwo’s dedication to seeing his country thrive serves as a driving force behind his career decisions.

Despite his hiatus from acting, Okonkwo’s legacy in Nollywood remains prominent, with iconic roles in films like “Arusi-Iyi,” “Oganigwe,” “World Apart,” and “Wives on Strike.” His portrayal of Andy Okeke in “Living in Bondage” and its sequel “Living in Bondage: Breaking Free” solidified his status as a celebrated actor in the industry.

As Kenneth Okonkwo continues to navigate the intersection of politics and entertainment, his unwavering commitment to a better Nigeria shines through. His journey serves as a testament to the power of individuals using their platform for positive change and progress.
