Federal Government’s Commitment to Press Freedom and Responsible Journalism

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, recently reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to upholding press freedom and urged journalists to practice responsible journalism. During a meeting with senior executives from the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO) in Abuja, Idris emphasized the importance of the media fulfilling its duties honestly and transparently while exercising press freedom.

Idris highlighted that press freedom is essential for a thriving democracy and acknowledged the vital role of a vibrant media landscape in promoting democracy. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu, a product of press freedom, would not suppress press freedom in any way.

However, Idris cautioned against intentionally spreading misinformation and incendiary reports under the guise of press freedom, as this could lead to societal discord and anarchy. He warned that disseminating such content could erode public trust in the media and damage its credibility.

In response to a request from CEMESO’s Executive Director, Dr. Akin Akingbulu, regarding constitutional provisions that may impede press freedom, Idris assured collaboration with the National Assembly to address these concerns. He also pledged to work with stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act and prevent its misuse.

Akingbulu commended Idris for transforming the ministry’s image and fostering a positive narrative in the information sector. The minister’s efforts have been instrumental in steering Nigeria towards a new era of progress and development.

It is crucial for journalists to uphold ethical standards and report truthfully to maintain the integrity of the media industry. By promoting responsible journalism and respecting press freedom, the media can contribute to a more informed and democratic society.
