Security Breach at UMU: SIT Report Reveals Intentions of Alleged Attacker

The recent Special Investigative Team (SIT) report on the breach of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s security detail at the United Methodist University commencement has revealed crucial insights into the intentions of the alleged attacker, Sam D. Kanwea, Jr.

Contrary to initial assumptions, the report clarified that Kanwea did not have any harmful intentions towards President Boakai, despite breaching security protocols. The SIT emphasized that Kanwea did not intend to harm the President, even though he managed to get close to him and make physical contact.

The incident, which occurred on January 30, during the President’s visit to the university, raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures for the country’s leader. The embarrassing security breach, captured on video and widely circulated on social and mainstream media, led to public criticism of the Executive Protection Service (EPS) for its perceived negligence.

In response to the report, the SIT recommended charging Kanwea for specific violations of the Penal Law of Liberia, highlighting lapses in the EPS’s security procedures. The team also recommended administrative actions against the EPS agents involved and called for continued in-service training to enhance operational capacity and readiness.

EPS Director Sam Gaye took full responsibility for the incident and pledged to implement enhanced security measures to prevent future breaches. President Boakai expressed gratitude for the report and committed to reviewing its recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The comprehensive investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Liberia National Police and Armed Forces of Liberia, underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its leaders and citizens. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining vigilance and adherence to security protocols in safeguarding public officials.
