The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Rivers State chapter has ordered all civil servants in the state to sit at home if fuel shortages and the scarcity of naira persist on Monday. The state NLC chairperson, Beatrice Itubo, issued the warning in a chat with journalists on Sunday evening. Itubo, who is also the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Rivers State, expressed sadness that workers’ salaries—described as static—can no longer cover the soaring cost of transport.

She said the current economic situation in the country has reduced workers’ pay to a “mincemeat,” and that such suffering is no longer acceptable. “We have declared a sit‑at‑home for all workers in Rivers State from Monday until further notice if the fuel crisis and the crazy transportation fare hikes continue,” Itubo announced. “Anyone or any organization that queries or sacks any worker who observes the sit‑at‑home will have the NLC Rivers State Council to contend with. This is not targeted at anyone or at the Rivers State Government,” she added.

Continuing, Itubo explained that the protest is a reaction to the plight of Nigerian workers. “Things like this actually spur my interest in running for the office of governor of the state. Ordinarily, if we had a listening government, I would have no business starting this journey. We cannot keep suffering as a result of this misrule,” she concluded.
