Nigeria international Victor Osimhen celebrated making history in Napoli’s 3‑0 victory over Spezia in the Serie A on Sunday. The league leaders, who extended their lead at the top of the table to 16 points, capitalised on three defensive errors from the visitors. After Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 47th minute, the 24‑year‑old striker netted in the 68th minute and added a second five minutes later. Osimhen became only the fourth Napoli player to reach 16 goals in the first 21 Serie A matches of a season, joining Luis Vinicio (1955/56), Edinson Cavani (2012/13) and Gonzalo Higuaín (2015/16).
In his post‑match interview with Sky Sport Italia, Osimhen described the achievement as a “great privilege” and praised his teammates and the opposition. “Congratulations to the team, it’s good to contribute two goals. Big respect to Spezia, they gave us a good fight in the first half,” he said. “We needed these points to keep the momentum going. I’m happy with the win and, of course, being part of Napoli’s history is a great privilege for me.”
The win leaves Napoli temporarily 16 points clear at the summit, ahead of the Derby della Madonnina between Inter and Milan later that evening. Osimhen emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum: “All the victories are important. We need to keep the momentum and try to win every game. It won’t be easy; Serie A is a very competitive league and we have to be at our best. We go back, we prepare for the next game—that is the most important thing.”
A curious incident occurred during the warm‑up when Osimhen accidentally struck a young woman among the Spezia supporters with a practice shot. He stopped to apologize and posed for selfies, saying, “I was taking a practice shot, missed the goal, and the ball hit a lady in the crowd. I felt sorry because I didn’t mean to do that, so I had to show my appreciation and say sorry.”
Napoli’s triumph brings them to 56 points from 21 matches, strengthening their pursuit of a first Scudetto since the 1989/90 season.
