In the fight against climate change, women are emerging as powerful leaders worldwide, and Tanzania is no exception. Zuhura Ahmad, Program Head at the Women in Recycling Foundation in Tanzania, recently took the stage at the WomenLift Health conference in Dar es Salaam to contribute to this crucial movement.
Ahmad, a rising activist in Tanzania’s environmental movement, has been making a significant impact. As the winner of the 2020 Earth Day contest organized by Nipe Fagio and a national winner of the African Youth Initiative on Climate Change, she now leads the Women in Recycling Foundation. Through knowledge sharing, capacity building, and skills development in waste management and recycling activities, she empowers women in Tanzania.
During her spotlight talk, Ahmad emphasized the role of Tanzanian women in shaping climate action through innovation, eco-friendly businesses, and advocacy. She highlighted the devastating effects of plastic pollution on the environment and communities, stressing the importance of women’s leadership in combating this issue.
Ahmad shared inspiring stories of Tanzanian women leading the charge against plastic pollution. From Mama Aisha organizing community beach clean-ups to Sister Fatima turning plastic into art, these women are making a difference. Dr. Zainab’s program educating fishermen and vendors on the link between plastic and marine life is also impactful.
As the founder of She Shapes Nature, Ahmad draws inspiration from initiatives like seaweed farms along the coast, which combat plastic pollution and offer hope for the future. Women like Halima lead these farms, symbolizing growth and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
Ahmad called on leaders, activists, and citizens to support policies and projects that prioritize women in the climate action movement. She emphasized the importance of women’s voices in discussions about climate change and gender equality, advocating for education, capacity building, and knowledge sharing to empower women and girls.
In her work as an environmental activist, Ahmad faces challenges related to funding and resources but remains positive and committed to creating a better future for the planet. She believes that by centering women and girls in climate action, we can address the challenges of climate change and create a more sustainable world for future generations.
As Ahmad continues her advocacy work, she urges young women and girls to get involved in the fight against climate change and calls on leaders to support their ideas and initiatives. By working together, we can create a better future for all.
