Gov Mutfwang clarifies alleged APC move

The Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to disclose the names of those allegedly pressuring him to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Governor Mutfwang previously claimed that several APC members had approached him about joining their party, but he would consider such a move only if directed by God or by the will of the people who elected him. He said, “Only two people would authorise me to change my party. One is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people.” He added that 60 to 70 percent of APC members in the state would welcome him, though they are hesitant to express this publicly.

Shittu Bamaiyi, the state’s acting publicity secretary of the APC, dismissed the governor’s claim as “self‑denial,” suggesting that Mutfwang is trying to divert attention from his administration’s shortcomings. Bamaiyi argued that if the governor had performed satisfactorily, there would be no talk of defection or political realignment. The APC’s response is essentially a dare to the governor to substantiate his statements, as the party seeks to clarify the situation.

The episode underscores the ongoing political dynamics in Plateau State, where the APC and PDP remain major contenders. Party defections are not uncommon in Nigerian politics, and the APC has been actively seeking to expand its membership. The Plateau State chapter’s challenge may be an attempt to test the governor’s resolve and create an opportunity for the APC to gain a high‑profile member. Observers and the public will be watching closely to see whether Governor Mutfwang responds to the APC’s challenge or maintains his current stance, given the potential implications for the state’s political landscape.
