SEECA Condemns 300% Tariff Increase, Demands Free Prepaid Meters

The South-East Electricity Consumers Association (SEECA) has strongly criticized the recent 300% tariff hike announced by the Federal Government. In a statement issued by the Chairman, Rev. Okechukwu Christopher Obioha, and Secretary, Mr. Ogubuike Ibeagi, the association demanded that prepaid meters be installed in every household and business before the new tariff is implemented.

During a meeting of electricity consumers in the South-East, SEECA members unanimously agreed that no consumer under the EEDC should pay for a prepaid meter. They emphasized that meters are the property of the EEDC and should be provided free of charge to consumers. Additionally, the association stated that individuals or communities should not have to purchase transformers for their electricity consumption. If necessary, procurement of transformers should only be done after negotiations and agreements with the EEDC or Geometrics.

SEECA also called for a minimum of two weeks notice after the delivery of bills before any disconnection of electricity services. They demanded an end to estimated billing and insisted that prepaid meters be issued to all consumers to avoid service interruptions.

The association strongly opposed the 300% tariff increase and urged the government to prioritize the installation of prepaid meters to ensure fair and transparent billing for all consumers. SEECA’s stance reflects the concerns of electricity users in the South-East region and highlights the importance of affordable and reliable energy services for households and businesses.
