The Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, claimed on Sunday that the “untimely” implementation of the naira‑swap policy was a deliberate move by Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emeifiele to retaliate for his failure to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket. Ganduje made the allegation at a campaign rally in Tsanyawa, where he introduced the APC governorship candidate, running mate and senatorial candidates to the public.

According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar, Ganduje said the CBN governor’s action was intended to create confusion ahead of the upcoming elections for “unjustifiable reasons.” He added that the CBN governor had been “in a bad mood” for some time because of his inability to win the party’s presidential nomination.

Governor Ganduje categorically stated that the Kano state government and the state APC oppose the CBN governor’s actions. “Currency redesign is done across the globe, but not in the way we are witnessing in our country. The timing is wrong, the deadline given is very wrong and deliberate,” he said.

To mitigate the hardship caused by the naira swap, Ganduje outlined several measures. He announced that bank managers would soon be summoned to explain the shortage of new naira notes in banks and that he would personally visit them to supervise the situation. He also recalled that during the COVID‑19 pandemic the state government distributed palliatives to all 44 local government areas and said a new distribution plan was “in the pipeline” to cushion the current impact on the people.

Finally, addressing the district heads of Kunchi and Tsanyawa, Ganduje urged community leaders to raise awareness in their jurisdictions, emphasizing that the hardship being experienced is “singlehandedly caused by the CBN governor” and appears designed to disrupt the democratic process.
