Liberia Faces Surge in Fire Outbreaks: National Fire Service Takes Action
Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia National Fire and Rescue Service has reported a concerning increase in fire incidents, with a total of 41 outbreaks recorded from January to February. This spike marks the highest number of fires in recent months, raising alarm among officials and the public alike.
Colonel G. Warsuwah Barvoul Sr., Director of the Liberia National Fire and Rescue Service, outlined the breakdown of these incidents during a press conference in Monrovia. Among the 41 outbreaks, 12 were classified as Class A fires, 3 as Class B fires, and 26 as electrical fires. Tragically, these incidents resulted in 11 fatalities and 2 injuries.
In March, an additional 11 fire outbreaks occurred, further highlighting the urgent need for fire safety measures. To address this pressing issue, the National Fire Service is set to launch a comprehensive fire protection awareness campaign. This initiative will focus on educating the public on proper housekeeping practices and safe handling of appliances to prevent future tragedies.
The awareness campaign will utilize various platforms, including jingles in local languages, community outreach programs, and talk shows. Additionally, stickers will be distributed to ensure that all households in Liberia are equipped with safety boxes for fire emergencies.
In response to the escalating crisis, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community leaders have joined forces to tackle the root causes of fire outbreaks. Efforts are underway to raise awareness about fire safety practices, enforce the purchase of fire extinguishers in vulnerable communities, and implement proactive measures to reduce future risks.
As Liberia grapples with this surge in fire incidents, the National Fire Service remains committed to safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens. Through collaborative efforts and proactive measures, the country aims to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of all residents.
