Search Continues for Missing 6-Year-Old Joshlin Smith as Controversy Surrounds South Africa’s Immigration White Paper

Search Efforts Continue for Missing 6-Year-Old Joshlin Smith

Despite ongoing search efforts, there is still no sign of missing six-year-old Joshlin Smith, who disappeared two months ago in the Western Cape. Rumors of sightings in the Saldanha Bay area have been dispelled by the police, who have been following up on leads and conducting thorough searches, including in stormwater drains. Community members, law enforcement, and other agencies have been working tirelessly to locate Joshlin, but she remains missing.

Four individuals, including Joshlin’s mother’s boyfriend, have been charged with kidnapping and human trafficking in connection with her disappearance. However, they have not been cooperative in helping authorities locate the missing child. Interpol has issued a yellow notice for Joshlin, and efforts are being made internationally to trace her possible whereabouts.

Controversy Surrounds South Africa’s White Paper on Immigration

The recent adoption of the white paper on citizenship, immigration, and refugee protection by the South African cabinet has sparked controversy. The Helen Suzman Foundation has criticized the lack of clarity in the white paper, stating that it fails to address the challenges faced by the country and does not fully consider the complexity of refugee laws. The foundation is calling on parliament not to adopt the proposals outlined in the white paper.

Similarly, the African Diaspora Forum believes that the white paper will not solve existing issues but will instead create more obstacles for asylum seekers and immigrants. The proposed overhaul of the migration system includes repealing current legislation in favor of a single law dealing with immigration.

Tshwane Police Officer Arrested in KPMG Money Laundering Case

The Tshwane municipality was shocked to learn that one of its police officers, Sgt. Lebogang Sigubudu, was arrested in connection with a money laundering case involving KPMG. Sigubudu, along with another individual, is accused of aiding a former KPMG employee in laundering illicit funds through their companies. The former employee, Fidelis Moema, is alleged to have embezzled R16.5 million from the company.

Sigubudu and his co-accused appeared in court and are currently in custody awaiting a bail judgment. The Tshwane metro police department has launched an internal investigation into the matter and is considering suspending Sigubudu pending the outcome of the investigation. Sigubudu has been with the city since 2009 and was initially employed as a traffic warden before becoming a permanent employee in 2011.
