The Federal College of Education, FCE Zaria, has taken a decisive step in addressing the issue of cultism on its campus. A committee has been established to investigate the activities of 12 students suspected to be members of a cult gang. These suspected cultists were apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation.

Suleiman Balarabe, the provost of the institution, revealed this development during the matriculation ceremony for NCE (Part-Time) students for the 2023/2024 academic session. The ceremony, which took place on the college premises, marked the beginning of a new academic year.

The provost emphasized the college’s commitment to eradicating the threat posed by cultism, which not only endangers the institution but also its surrounding community. The investigation into the suspected cultists was triggered by a student’s report to the security division, alleging that he was being pressured to join the gang.

Upon uncovering the involvement of 12 students in the cult activities, the security division swiftly took action, leading to the handover of the suspects to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kaduna State Police Command for further scrutiny.

In a bid to address the root causes of such behaviors, the college has assembled a committee comprising experienced administrators, lecturers, security personnel, and community leaders. This multi-faceted approach aims to uproot the issue of cultism and promote a safe and conducive learning environment.

During the matriculation ceremony, Provost Balarabe urged the new students to uphold values of integrity and responsibility, steering clear of negative influences like gangsterism, substance abuse, and inappropriate attire. By embodying these principles, the matriculants can contribute positively to the college’s reputation and the education sector as a whole.

With a total of 1,680 NCE Part-Time students taking the matriculation oath, the college looks forward to nurturing a new generation of teachers who will uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.

As the college continues its efforts to combat cultism and promote a culture of excellence, it reaffirms its commitment to providing quality education and shaping future leaders in the teaching profession.
