The Enugu State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council has denied allegations that its governorship candidate, Dr. Peter Mbah, forged his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate. Describing the claim as “the conjecture of an indolent opposition and the last kick of a dying horse,” the council said the opposition in Enugu has accepted that it has no realistic prospects in the upcoming election and is resorting to smear campaigns.
Nana Ogbodo, Director of Public Communications and spokesperson for the Enugu State PDP Campaign Council, issued a statement titled “There is no truth whatsoever to the allegation.” The statement noted that a press conference held by an unnamed group in Abuja claimed, under the Freedom of Information Act 2011, to have found that Dr. Mbah submitted a forged NYSC certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission. Ogbodo refuted this, asserting that Dr. Mbah was duly mobilised for the one‑year mandatory national youth service in Lagos in 2002, completed the program, and received a legitimate NYSC discharge certificate. He also pointed out that the press release was unsigned by any official of the faceless group and warned that legal steps would be taken to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The campaign council emphasized that this is not the first attempt by the opposition to discredit the PDP candidate. Previously, the opposition allegedly forged court processes and filed frivolous, malicious lawsuits, claiming that Dr. Mbah had entered a plea of guilt and a plea bargain, which would disqualify him from standing for election. The council urged the Nigerian public to disregard this latest accusation as yet another act of mischief by a waning opposition.
