Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has announced the construction of the Invictus Centre, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded soldiers and veterans. The announcement was made during a reception in Abuja, honoring the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan, who were on a private visit to Nigeria.

The Invictus Centre is poised to become a world-class establishment, offering comprehensive care and post-traumatic stress remedies to soldiers affected by operational trauma. Prince Harry, who has been a long-time advocate for wounded servicemen and women through the Invictus Games, expressed his deep emotional connection to the initiative and praised the Nigerian government for its commitment to the project.

Minister of Defence, Alhaji Muhammed Badaru, echoed the sentiments, acknowledging the courage and sacrifices of the wounded heroes. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to their well-being and expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Invictus Game foundation to further their vision across the Nigerian armed forces.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, represented by Maj.-Gen. Jimmy Akpor, highlighted the army’s extensive involvement in operations that have resulted in numerous personnel sustaining injuries. He assured continued support for their medical and psychosocial needs, including the approval of N88 million for limb prosthetics to aid in the recovery of one of the soldiers.

The establishment of the Invictus Centre marks a milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to provide the best possible care for its military personnel, reflecting a nation’s gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
