A tragic incident occurred on Friday in Ekeki Police Station, Azikoro Road, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, when a father of two, identified as Amas, was electrocuted on a high-tension pole. Amas, a non-staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), who lived in the neighbourhood, was on the pole to connect clients to the federal line when the incident took his life.
The deceased, a resident of Nembe Local Government Area of the state, was stuck on the pole for hours before PHCN officials could rescue him. According to an eyewitness, Michael Orubo, Amas was a well-liked individual who often attended to electric connection work in the area. He was known to use the money he earned from these connections to support his family.
Another eyewitness recounted the tragic event, stating that Amas had passed by just five minutes before the incident occurred. The eyewitness also mentioned that the deceased was wearing a belt that held him tight to the pole, making it difficult for onlookers to assist him. It took hours for PHCN officials to arrive and bring down the lifeless body.
Amas’s mother, who has a shop close to the scene of the incident, was deeply affected by the news and has been inconsolable since. The community has come together to console her and support her during this difficult time.
This tragic incident highlights the risks associated with unauthorized electrical work and the importance of safety measures in such operations.
