Port Sudan, Sudan – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia arrived in Port Sudan on Tuesday for a crucial meeting with army ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The visit marks a significant diplomatic effort by the Ethiopian leader to seek “sustainable solutions for Sudan’s stability,” according to a statement from Abiy’s office.

Abiy’s trip to Port Sudan, the new seat of Sudan’s government, comes amid a protracted and escalating conflict that has intensified since late June when the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the capital of Sennar state. This development has brought the war closer to Ethiopia’s border and shifted the balance of power in the region.

Previously, the army loyal to Burhan had controlled much of eastern and northern Sudan. However, the war, which is now in its second year, remains deadlocked with ongoing hostilities and mutual accusations of wrongdoing between the conflicting sides.

The conflict has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing nearly 10 million people, according to the United Nations. Despite international calls for peace, efforts to end the violence have yet to yield a resolution.

During his visit, Abiy Ahmed is expected to engage in discussions aimed at de-escalating the situation and exploring pathways toward a peaceful resolution. His diplomatic mission underscores Ethiopia’s role in regional stability and reflects broader international concerns about the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
