Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State met on Wednesday with the leadership of the state chapter of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria to address the persistent fuel scarcity in the region. After the meeting, the governor told reporters that the discussion was aimed at finding a lasting solution to the problem.
He explained that the marketers reported a key issue: the NNPC had instructed them to collect fuel in Lagos at N172‑N174 per litre, but fuel is unavailable there. Consequently, they have been forced to purchase from independent importers, who are selling at N300‑N310 per litre. Transporting the product from Lagos to Katsina adds an additional cost of N10‑N20 per litre, assuming the journey proceeds smoothly—a difficult assumption given the poor state of the roads.
Masari said the matter has been reported to the NNPC, and the state now has a list of all allocations intended for Katsina. He assured independent marketers that he is writing to the relevant department to resolve their problems, especially for those who have paid for fuel but have not received it. He also noted that some marketers have not registered with the NNPC because the registration process is cumbersome, and pledged that the government will assist them in completing registration.
