Ukraine and Russia Exchange 95 Prisoners Each in UAE-Brokered Deal

In a significant breakthrough, Ukraine and Russia have exchanged 95 prisoners each, marking the 54th such swap since the conflict began in February 2022. The exchange was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the sixth time this year.

According to officials from both countries, the latest prisoner swap was a significant step towards bringing an end to the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the UAE’s involvement, stating that 95 members of Ukraine’s defense forces had been “liberated from Russian captivity.”

The Russian Defense Ministry expressed its gratitude to the UAE for its mediation efforts, stating that the freed Russian soldiers would be flown to Moscow for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

This development comes as Ukraine officials revealed that over 3,400 people, including both civilians and military personnel, have been returned from Russian captivity since the start of the conflict. The United Nations (UN) has reported that most Ukrainian prisoners suffer routine medical neglect, severe and systematic mistreatment, and even torture while in detention.

While there have been isolated reports of abuse of Russian soldiers during capture or transit to internment sites, the latest prisoner swap marks a positive step towards bringing an end to the conflict.

As the world continues to grapple with the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, this development brings hope to families and loved ones of those detained and provides a glimmer of light in the midst of chaos.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
