African Union Leaders to Convene in Accra for Mid-Year Coordination Meeting

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria is set to depart Abuja for Accra, Ghana, on July 20 to attend the Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and African Union Member States. As the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will address the meeting, highlighting the achievements and challenges faced in West Africa since the last meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 2023.

According to a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu will present the “2024 Report on the State of the Community,” focusing on peace, regional security, governance, economic integration, humanitarian and social development, energy, mines, and agriculture. The meeting will be convened under the AU theme of the year 2024: “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century.”

The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting was conceptualized in 2017 as the principal forum for the AU and RECs to align their work and coordinate the implementation of the continental integration agenda, replacing the June/July summits. The meeting aims to evaluate the AU’s early warning and conflict prevention mechanisms and promote cooperation among regional economic communities to accelerate integration.

President Tinubu will be accompanied by senior government officials. The meeting is expected to adopt a declaration at the end of the gathering.

This event marks a significant step towards strengthening regional integration and cooperation among African nations. With the AU’s theme focusing on education and skill development, the meeting is poised to foster greater collaboration and economic growth across the continent.
