Katsina State Governor Vows to Implement Supreme Court’s Decision on Local Government Autonomy
Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has affirmed his commitment to implementing the decision of the Supreme Court on local government autonomy. The ruling granted autonomy to local governments following a suit filed by the federal government against state governors.
According to a statement by the governor’s chief press secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, which was issued in Abuja on Saturday, local governments in Katsina State already enjoy a significant level of autonomy. The governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to upholding the constitution.
“It is not my intention to interpret this judgment. Katsina State is a law-abiding state that will operate under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Governor Radda said at a stakeholders’ meeting in Katsina.
The governor also directed the state attorney-general to provide a full report on the legal implications of the Supreme Court’s decision.
As for his personal experience, Radda shared that he was once a Chairman of Charanchi Local Government in a previous administration, and he understands the unique challenges faced by local governments.
