The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 41,886 specialised surveillance devices and operational tools nationwide to enhance intelligence gathering and response capabilities. The distribution, which covers all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, follows the corps’ annual strategic meeting with state commanders.
Commandant-General Ahmed Audi, who oversaw the distribution in Abuja on Friday, stressed that the technology is central to the NSCDC’s mandate to protect critical national assets and infrastructure. He warned officers against any indiscipline, stating the equipment must be used strictly for official duties. “These gadgets are provided to ensure the smooth delivery of our duties,” Audi said, noting the new strategic phase focuses on using advanced technology to combat banditry, illegal mining, and logging.
Each state formation received a comprehensive operational pack. Key components include three drones, 50 operational bags, 200 uniform pairs, 100 bulletproof vests, 100 helmets, 20 body cameras, GPS coordinate trackers with situation room connectivity, solar chargers, and night-vision goggles. The packs also contain communication tools like radios, non-lethal equipment such as shocking batons, and administrative items including code of conduct documents and standard operating procedure manuals.
Audi highlighted that the technology will improve surveillance capacity, enable rapid response to threats, and enhance officer safety during missions. He cautioned against misuse, affirming that circumvention of the tools would not be tolerated. The deployment builds on recent NSCDC operations, which have included the destruction of over 400 illegal refineries and the prosecution of economic sabotage cases.
The Commandant-General expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his reappointment, which he said ensures continuity in reforming the corps. He cited progress made during his first tenure, such as establishing a structured training curriculum and addressing personnel rank stagnation. Audi pledged further achievements, emphasising that technological advancement, supported by the Federal Government and the Ministry of Interior, is vital to national security.
This mass equipping of the NSCDC represents a significant investment in domestic security infrastructure, aiming to create a more coordinated and tech-driven approach to safeguarding Nigeria’s assets and communities.
