Osun State Governor Endorses Traditional Approach to Food Price Control
In a bold move to address food insecurity in Osun State, Nigeria, Governor Adetola Adeleke has endorsed the traditional approach to food price control introduced by some traditional rulers in the state. The Governor has directed the Food Security Implementation Committee to expedite efforts to ensure a secure and accessible food supply value chain.
The traditional approach, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and the Oluwo of Iwo land, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, involves directing market women and men to reduce the cost of foodstuffs. The initiative has already been adopted in several local government areas, including Ife, Ede, and Iwo.
Governor Adeleke praised the traditional rulers for taking steps to regulate food prices and curtail the negative activities of middlemen in marketplaces. He commended the Ooni of Ife for abolishing market associations that induced high food prices and called on all other traditional rulers in Osun State to emulate the actions of the royal fathers.
The Governor also tasked the Committee on Food Security Implementation to quickly come up with actionable plans, deliverables, and timelines, noting that food security is a matter demanding urgent attention. He emphasized the need for a holistic agenda that addresses all segments of the agricultural value chains and commended the Commissioner for Agriculture for rising to the occasion on the state’s agro-industrialization agenda.
The Governor’s move to endorse the traditional approach to food price control is seen as a significant step towards addressing food insecurity in Osun State. By involving traditional rulers in the effort, the Governor is leveraging their influence and authority to bring about positive change in the lives of the people.
