Nasir Isa Kwarra, the Chairman of the National Population Commission, announced that the upcoming census will include Sambisa Forest despite the security challenges in the area. Speaking at the inauguration of the Population and Housing National Census Publicity Committee in Abuja, Kwarra assured that every village has been covered and that no one will be left out of the census process. He noted that commission staff have even reached Sambisa Forest, emphasizing the commitment to count all residents.
Kwarra explained that all structures have been captured and geo‑coded, a step that has shaped the methodology and quality of preparations over the past few years. He stressed that advocacy, publicity, and public enlightenment are essential components of the census effort. According to him, the task before the commission and the newly formed committee is monumental, requiring widespread information, education, and enlightenment of Nigerians about the scope of the census.
The census will involve counting every person residing in Nigeria and will be conducted simultaneously in every household across the country. Kwarra highlighted that, in a world where information reigns, targeted advocacy and sustained publicity are indispensable for the successful execution of the exercise. This need is especially pressing given that the census follows immediately after the 2023 general elections.
