Democracy in Nigeria: A Grim Reality, States IPAC
Abuja, Nigeria – The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has lamented that democracy in Nigeria is far from being a true representation of its ideals. In a communique issued after a roundtable discussion, themed, "The Role of the Judiciary in Nigeria’s Democracy Sustainability," IPAC decried the militarization of Nigeria’s democracy, which has led to a system whereby power is obtained through thuggery and manipulation.
The Council stated that this has resulted in the poor being plundered, and the rich becoming progressively richer. IPAC lamented that the judiciary, which is statutorily charged with promoting accountability and upholding the rule of law, has failed to do so with the efficiency required to protect and preserve democratic principles in Nigeria.
"Certainly, Nigeria’s brand of democracy is one where power is held by those who have no respect for laws and regulations. Nothing seems to be done decently or fairly," the communique pointed out.
IPAC expressed dissatisfaction with the way elections are fought and won in Nigeria, saying that it would lead to a calamitous outcome for democracy and electoral jurisprudence in Nigeria.
The Council also stressed that history has shown that the legal profession plays crucial roles in promoting good governance and accountability around the world. In Nigeria, the judiciary and legal profession must take concrete actions to ensure that justice is served honestly and fairly.
"The Nigerian judiciary and legal profession must not disappoint Nigerians. The image of the judiciary is on trial, and it is up to our judges to prove themselves as heroes of democracy," IPAC emphatically stated.
In the meantime, concerned citizens are left wondering what may become of democracy in the embattled nation, one that has witnessed unproportionate injustices since its inception.
