University of Benin Sets Up Committee to Investigate Allegations of Sexual Harassment Against Professor

The University of Benin, Edo State, has taken a significant step in addressing allegations of sexual harassment against one of its professors. According to a circular issued by the investigation committee’s Secretary, B. D. Jonathan, the management has set up a committee to investigate the allegations of sexual harassment against a Professor in the Department of Philosophy.

The circular, which was made available to journalists on Saturday, urges members of staff and students with relevant information or who have experienced any related incidents to come forward and share their stories. The committee emphasizes that all information will be treated with utmost confidentiality and that the identity of those who come forward will be protected.

The investigation comes after an unnamed female graduate of the university called out the lecturer on social media, alleging that she suffered untold sexual harassment from the professor during her undergraduate studies.

This development is not isolated, as several universities in Nigeria have grappled with similar allegations of sexual misconduct in recent years. In early August 2024, the Abia State University, Uturu, suspended a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Udochukwu Ndukwe, for three months following allegations of sexual harassment against a female student.

A recent report by The PUNCH revealed that no fewer than 39 lecturers in the nation’s tertiary institutions had been indicted and dismissed over sexual misconduct in the past five years. This highlights the prevalence of sexual harassment in Nigeria’s higher education system, a problem that requires urgent attention and action.

The World Bank Group’s 2018 survey found that 70 percent of female graduates from tertiary institutions in the country had experienced sexual harassment, with the main perpetrators being classmates and lecturers. Despite the passage of a bill in 2021 stipulating 21 years imprisonment for randy lecturers, most of those found guilty after the bill was passed were simply sacked, rather than facing criminal punishment.

The University of Benin’s decision to set up a committee to investigate the allegations is a step in the right direction, as it acknowledges the seriousness of the issue and commits to ensuring a thorough and fair investigation. We hope that this investigation will lead to justice and accountability for the affected parties and help to create a safer and more respectful learning environment for all students.
