Tyler, the Creator Dubs Supreme ‘Generation’s Version of Louis Vuitton’
In a recent video released by Supreme, the influential musician and long-time fan of the brand, Tyler, the Creator, shared his thoughts on what sets Supreme apart from other streetwear brands. The Odd Future leader praises the New York-based brand for being his generation’s equivalent of the prestigious luxury brand Louis Vuitton, pointing to its exclusivity, scarcity of desirable items, and community-driven approach to building a loyal fan base.
At 16, 17, 18, and 19 years old, Tyler says, Supreme was the ultimate luxury brand among his peers, symbolizing the pinnacle of their fashion aspirations. He recalled using his earnings from selling limited-edition collaboration sneakers with Nike to fund his first trip abroad more than a decade ago.
According to Tyler, Supreme’s exclusivity is a result of its high prices and limited releases of highly sought-after items, which creates an air of mystique around the brand. “Especially knowing everyone didn’t have it, it only made it more special,” he said. Tyler also mentions that he values having unique items not everyone else possesses, citing instances where he owned limited-edition items, such as a Bad Brains hoodie, that few others had.
The core of Supreme’s endurance and cultural relevance lies in its dedication to building a community of loyal fans, comprising the brand’s most die-hard enthusiasts. Tyler believes that seeing someone publicly wearing Supreme merchandise was like spotting a genuine aficionado: “If you was in public and you saw someone like with Supreme or any of these things, you knew that they were genuinely into something, so building that community of just folks who really shared the same interest was so genuine.”
Tyler’s statements echo sentiments shared by fans worldwide, indicating that Supreme’s impact extends far beyond its high-end fashion appeal to embrace a broader cultural phenomenon.
