NAFDAC Seizes Petrol Tankers Transporting Vegetable Oil in Lagos

NAFDAC Seizes Petrol Tankers Carrying Vegetable Oil in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to ensure food safety in Nigeria. On Wednesday, the agency announced the interception of three petrol tanker trucks in Apapa, Lagos, suspected of being used to transport crude edible vegetable oil.

According to NAFDAC, the trucks were seized due to concerns about potential health risks from chemical contamination. The trucks had previously been used for transporting petrol, which raises serious questions about their cleanliness and suitability for carrying food products.

The crude soybean oil seized was promptly escorted by NAFDAC officials to a processing facility in Sango-Ota, Ogun State, where it was handed over to the agency’s Southwest Zonal Office for further regulatory inspection.

This operation highlights the dangers of repurposing petrol tankers for food products, which can pose a significant risk to public health. NAFDAC’s swift action in seizing the trucks and ensuring the oil is properly regulated is a welcome development in the ongoing efforts to ensure food safety in Nigeria.
