The Unity Advocacy Group has voiced concern over rumors that the military is planning to disrupt the elections and stage a coup, warning that such speculation could heighten tension in an already charged political climate. Although the military has denied the allegations and affirmed its commitment to the country’s democratic system, the group believes that allowing these claims to go unchecked could ignite unrest.
In a statement released on Saturday, the group’s convener, Ifeanyi Aigbedion, cautioned politicians against making inflammatory remarks and urged them to “allow the will of God to prevail in the ongoing political process.” He emphasized that the group is not defending any individual or political party but is instead advising leaders to practice both giving and taking.
“We are deeply concerned about underground plots by disgruntled elements seeking to derail our march toward stable democracy,” the statement read. “We are especially worried about attempts to draw the Armed Forces of Nigeria into the political arena, which could set the nation on fire.” Aigbedion noted that the military, already engaged in operations aimed at restoring peace, should continue to support the growth of Nigeria’s nascent democracy. Involving them in politics, he warned, would be a disservice that must cease.
