As the 2023 general elections approach, Major General Godwin Mutkut, General Officer Commanding the 8th Division of the Nigerian Army, assured residents that the division is ready to ensure the elections are free, fair and credible. He made the statement at the Gingiya Barracks in Sokoto on Saturday during the 2022 end‑of‑year West African Social Activities (WASA) traditional events.
WASA, a tradition upheld by the Nigerian Army, dates back to the colonial era of the Second World War. It is a social function in which indigenous Nigerian Army personnel celebrate their cultural heritage at the end of each year, fostering esprit de corps. The event brings together officers, soldiers, their families and the surrounding communities to celebrate and socialize. Activities include displays of rich cultures and cuisines, fire‑burning, dancing, other entertainment and the beating of the retreat.
The GOC noted that, over the past decades, the Nigerian Army has been engaged in operations both at home and abroad to sustain peace and protect the nation’s territorial integrity. “In line with the Chief of Army Staff’s vision of ‘A Professional Nigerian Army Ready to Accomplish Assigned Missions within a Joint Environment in Defence of Nigeria’, I am proud to say that the officers and soldiers of the 8th Division have performed exceptionally well, as evident in the current level of peace and security in Sokoto State,” he said. “The 8th Division will continue to be committed and responsive in discharging its constitutional roles. Accordingly, the division is fully prepared to support all relevant security agencies and authorities to create an environment that ensures the forthcoming general elections are conducted in a free and fair atmosphere.”
He expressed sincere gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari, Commander‑in‑Chief of the Armed Forces, for his numerous supports to the Nigerian Army’s leadership, and thanked the Chief of Army Staff for his direction and necessary assistance.
In his remarks, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal commended the Nigerian Army for maintaining peace and tranquility in the state. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mainasara Ahmed, Tambuwal affirmed that the state government will continue to support the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in defeating all criminal elements.
A highlight of the event was the awarding of excellence to troops who distinguished themselves during the year, followed by cultural dances performed by various ethnic groups in the state, to the admiration of all attendees.
