Nigeria’s Police Force Introduces Standardised Uniforms for Supernumerary Police Personnel
In a move aimed at enhancing professionalism and visibility, the Nigeria Police Force has launched a new standardised uniform for its Supernumerary Police (SPY) personnel. The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered organisations utilising SPY personnel to strictly adhere to the new uniforms.
The IGP made the announcement during the inauguration of the new standard SPY uniforms and kits in Abuja. According to him, the new uniforms are a significant milestone in the Force’s efforts to establish a distinct identity for the SPY Unit. The Unit has faced difficulties in establishing its identity due to a lack of standardised and distinctive uniforms.
The IGP also highlighted the importance of preventing the unauthorised production and distribution of police uniforms, including the SPY uniform. He emphasized that the Force is taking measures to ensure that only approved uniforms are used, and that organisations utilising SPY personnel must register and acquire the uniforms through the Force Quartermaster and personnel across the states.
The Nigeria Police Force Act 2020 (as amended) formally establishes the Supernumerary Police as an integral unit within the Force, defining their powers, privileges, and functions, as well as their supervision by the Nigeria Police Force. The Act also outlines the process for private organisations or government departments to apply for the services of SPY officers.
The introduction of standardised uniforms for SPY personnel is a crucial step towards enhancing professionalism and visibility within the Nigeria Police Force. The move aims to establish a distinct identity for the SPY Unit and ensure that only approved uniforms are used. As the Force continues to implement measures to prevent unauthorised production and distribution of uniforms, it is hoped that this initiative will help to boost the confidence and effectiveness of SPY personnel in their roles.
