Breakthrough in Statistical Data Analysis: Babcock University Unveils First-Ever African-Produced Software Package

In a groundbreaking achievement, Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, has unveiled the first-ever robust and workable statistical data analysis software package, dubbed VSP (ValueStats Statistical Package). Produced by Professor of Accounting and programmer, Prof Enyi Patrick Enyi, the software is a significant milestone in Africa’s pursuit of innovation and self-reliance.

The unveiling ceremony, held at the Babcock Business School Auditorium, was attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ademola Tayo, who described the achievement as a great moment of pride for Africa. According to Tayo, the VSP statistical package is special and peculiar in its own way, being the first African-produced package of its kind. He revealed that the software will save the country a whopping sum of $1 billion annually, making it a game-changer for the accounting profession.

The Vice-Chancellor also praised Professor Enyi, describing him as a brilliant scholar and teacher of repute. Enyi, who has spent two years developing the software, said the urge to create an accounting statistical package that suits the peculiarities of Nigeria’s environment and ways of doing things in Africa was the ultimate motivation. He emphasized that the software is user-friendly, with a menu-driven interface that suggests what the user wants to do and allows them to pick and choose.

Enyi highlighted the benefits of the software, stating that it will automatically produce graphs for users, unlike other packages that require manual selection. He also mentioned that the software is significantly cheaper than foreign alternatives, costing $40, which is equivalent to N60,000, and can be used until a new version is developed.

The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Davidson Alaribe, also lauded Enyi for registering the institute and the accounting profession on yet another global map of excellence and innovation. Enyi’s achievement is a testament to the potential of Africans to solve their own socio-economic challenges, and the breakthrough is expected to have far-reaching implications for the accounting profession and beyond.
