Nigerian Social Media Commentator Slams Criticism of Former Super Eagles Coach
In the wake of Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Benin Republic in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier, popular social media commentator Daniel Regha has hit out at Nigerians who criticized former Super Eagles coach Finidi George on social media. The Super Eagles secured all three points thanks to goals from Ademola Lookman (2) and Victor Osimhen in Uyo.
Some Nigerians on X took to social media to criticize Finidi, who resigned as head coach of the Super Eagles in June, citing his role in the team’s poor display against Benin Republic and South Africa in the World Cup qualifiers in June. However, Regha believes it is pointless to criticize Finidi after just one win.
In his statement, Regha emphasized that the Super Eagles are yet to prove they can rival tougher opponents. He wrote on X after the game, "Criticising Finidi George after just one win is pointless because the Super Eagles are yet to prove that they can rival tougher opponents; In every poor performance, the players also share in the blame, not just the coach." Regha also pointed out that Nigerians tend to look past their players’ errors when the team wins, only to complain bitterly when they get outplayed by a better-prepared team.
Regha’s comments highlight the importance of perspective and context in evaluating a team’s performance. With the Super Eagles yet to face tougher opponents, it is premature to pinpoint a single individual, in this case, Finidi George, as the problem. Instead, Regha’s message encourages fans to look at the bigger picture and acknowledge the role that both players and coaches play in a team’s success or failure.
