Labour Party Leadership of Usman and Otti Attracts Defection

The Labour Party (LP) has gained a notable new member with the defection of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a federal lawmaker from Abia State, a development the party describes as a significant boost following a period of internal crisis.

Ikwechegh, who represented the Aba North/South Federal Constituency, left the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) after a meeting with Abia State Governor Alex Otti, an influential LP figure. He cited alignment with the LP’s “people-centered agenda” as his reason for joining.

This defection marks the LP’s first major gain since severe setbacks after the 2023 general elections. Following a strong performance that year—winning eight Senate seats and 35 House of Representatives seats—the party experienced a significant decline. A leadership conflict under former National Chairman Julius Abure led to a wave of defections to other parties, court-ordered rerun elections, and the loss of members, drastically reducing its parliamentary representation by mid-2025.

The party’s stabilization began after the Supreme Court affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as National Chairman. Her leadership, emphasizing reconciliation and inclusive internal democracy, has been credited with rebuilding trust. This recovery is complemented by Governor Otti’s governance in Abia State, highlighted by policies such as prompt salary payments, free education for indigent children, and a Senior Citizens Law, which the LP holds as a model of its potential impact.

Ikwechegh’s move is presented as evidence of renewed confidence in the LP’s direction under Usman and Otti. The party’s Kaduna State Chairman, Yusuf Solomon Danbaki, stated that the development signals a reversal of fortunes and extended an invitation to former members to return, describing the period of internal strife as over.

The defection underscores a potential turning point for the LP as it seeks to consolidate its position and regain lost ground ahead of future political contests.
