The Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 5—covering Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states—has died. He passed away on Sunday morning at Benin Teaching Hospital in Edo State after a brief illness. The news was announced by Police Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Command, SP Ahmed Wakil, in a concise WhatsApp message. He wrote, “Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. With a heavy heart but total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, I wish to announce the death of A.I.G. Lawan Tanko Jimeta. He died at the Teaching Hospital, Benin, Edo State, this morning after a brief illness. To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return, a real departure of a Godly man. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and reward him with al‑Jannatul Fiddausi. May He give the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, amin.”
A.I.G. Lawan Tanko Jimeta was a graduate of English Language from the University of Maiduguri and held a master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the National Open University. He assumed the role of A.I.G. for Zone 5 on 13 January 2022. Throughout his career, he served in various capacities within the Nigeria Police Force, including as Edo State Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Personal Assistant to the A.I.G. of Police (Department of Training and Development, FHQ Annex, Lagos State), Chief of Training at the Directorate on Peace‑keeping (FHQ, Abuja), and Area Commander of the Suleja Area Command.
