Dr. Abiye Sekibo, the Director‑General of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers State, survived an assassination attempt on Thursday night. Speaking on Arise TV on Sunday, he said he never realized “how easy it is to die.” Sekibo recounted that he received a message late Thursday indicating that the venue for the PDP presidential campaign rally was on fire. “I thought, ‘How is this possible?’” he said.
Determined to investigate, Sekibo drove toward the reported blaze. From a distance he saw Hilux vehicles parked on the right side of the road and flames emanating from the rally site, so he continued onward. “When I told the driver to turn around, people in police uniforms emerged from those vehicles,” he explained. As they attempted to leave, a “rain of bullets” erupted, leaving Sekibo stunned.
Sekibo and his driver managed to stop at a filling station where a queue of people had formed. After about five minutes, the Hilux vehicles sped past them, allowing the pair to escape unharmed.
Governor Nyesom Wike later addressed the incident, denying any involvement in the alleged plot. “Let me use this opportunity to debunk the allegation that Abiye Sekibo claimed I sponsored an attempted assassination on his life,” Wike said at a rally in Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Saturday. “I want to state categorically that all of us from Rivers State know who is who. We know who has killed many people in this state.”
