PSG ordered to pay Mbappé €55m in unpaid wages

French League Orders Paris Saint-Germain to Pay Kylian Mbappé $61 Million in Unpaid Wages

The French league’s legal commission has issued a stern decision, ordering Paris Saint-Germain to pay Kylian Mbappé the 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages he claims he’s entitled to. The league confirmed the decision on Thursday, just a day after the France superstar rejected a mediation offer by the commission in his dispute with his former club.

Mbappé’s representatives had asked the commission to take note of the non-payment of three months’ salary and the last third of a loyalty bonus. However, PSG does not intend to pay and has announced plans to take further legal action. The club argues that it does not owe money to the World Cup winner under an agreement made when Mbappé was sidelined ahead of the 2023-24 season.

The dispute between Mbappé and PSG stems from the player’s decision not to prolong his contract with the club. Mbappé had felt let down by PSG’s failure to keep promises to sign key players, which led to tensions during his final season at the club. When he signed a new contract in 2022, he was paraded in front of fans holding up a jersey with 2025 on it, reportedly annoying him because the contract was until 2024 with an option for an extra season.

The situation came to a head in June last year when Mbappé informed PSG he would not take the option for an extra year, effectively ending his contract in its final year. This led to a tense transfer standoff, with PSG ultimately letting him return to the lineup after “constructive and positive talks” between the two parties.

Mbappé has since joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, and the dispute has become increasingly acrimonious. PSG has accused the player of making “public and private commitments” that must be respected, citing the unprecedented benefits he received during his seven years at the club. The club has also threatened to take the matter to another legal forum if Mbappé pursues the matter further.

The French league’s decision marks a significant escalation in the dispute, with PSG now facing the possibility of being ordered to pay the full amount of the unpaid wages. The matter is set to continue playing out in the coming months and year, with both parties vying for a resolution.
