Gambia’s Vice President Launches Preliminary Report of 2024 Population and Housing Census

The Gambia’s Vice President, Muhammed BS Jallow, has launched the preliminary report of the 2024 Population and Housing Census, marking a significant milestone in the country’s national development efforts. The census, which was conducted using advanced technology, provides a comprehensive picture of the country’s population, housing conditions, and development trends.

According to VP Jallow, the census is more than just a collection of numbers. It is a critical endeavour that provides the data needed to guide informed decision-making, design effective policies, and monitor the country’s progress. The report highlights key demographic shifts, economic dynamics, urbanization trends, and housing conditions that will help policymakers tailor policies to meet the changing needs of the population.

The census findings will support the government’s strategic initiatives, including the implementation of the Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (RSNDP) and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The data will inform policy decisions and development strategies aimed at addressing poverty, ensuring no one is left behind, and driving sustainable growth.

Statistician General Nyakassi Sanyang emphasized the significance of the census, stating that it represents a pivotal achievement in the country’s national development efforts. The census data will shape the future of the country, influencing decisions that impact every aspect of Gambian life.

The approach to the 2024 Census has embraced technological advancements, including the implementation of Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) method, which allows for real-time data collection and immediate validation of information. This has enabled the country to streamline the data collection process, reducing the likelihood of errors and improving the reliability of the results.

The full and detailed results of the census will be released in the coming days, providing a more comprehensive picture of the country’s population and development trends. The government has emphasized the importance of utilizing this information effectively, engaging all sectors, and building a transparent, data-driven governance system that reflects the will and needs of the Gambian people.

The Gambia’s commitment to the African Union Agenda 2063 and the global Sustainable Development Goals underscores the significance of this census in contributing to broader development objectives. The country’s efforts to harness the power of data to drive sustainable growth and development are a testament to its commitment to the well-being of its citizens and the region.
