Nigeria’s Economy on Brink of Catastrophe: Peter Obi Warns of ‘Extreme Hunger’ Crisis
Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has sounded a dire warning about Nigeria’s economic crisis, stating that 38 million people in the country are on the verge of extreme hunger.
In a recent interview with News Central TV, Obi condemned the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress administration’s wasteful spending, blaming it for exacerbating the living conditions of Nigerians. He pointed out specific instances of alleged corruption, such as the purchase of a new presidential jet for $100 million, the renovation of the vice president’s lodge for N21 billion, and the construction of the National Assembly clinic for N15 billion.
“With 38 million people struggling to put food on their tables, you cannot tell them to fast while you are feasting,” Obi emphasized. “Hunger and poverty are dire issues that need to be addressed immediately.”
Obi urged the Federal Government to redirect its resources towards development areas such as health, education, poverty alleviation, and security. “We are the poverty capital of the world, with 38 million people struggling to make ends meet. We must invest in agriculture to solve hunger, unemployment, and inflation,” he appealed.
In a hint of potential alliances, Obi suggested the possibility of merger with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election to salvage the country from hunger and insecurity.
Obi’s grim warning underscores the urgent need for meaningful economic reforms to address Nigeria’s deep-rooted challenges. As a nation teetering on the brink of catastrophe, it remains to be seen whether Obi’s bold words will inspire meaningful action or simply fade into rhetorical noise.
