Nigeria’s Power Transmission Capacity Boosted with New Transformer Commissioning
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has made a significant leap in improving the country’s power transmission capacity with the successful commissioning of a new 1×100 megavolt amperes 132/33 kilovolt power transformer at its substation in Maryland, Lagos State. The new facility was inaugurated on Friday, according to a statement released by TCN on its official X account on Saturday.
The newly commissioned transformer is expected to increase the capacity of the substation from 90 megavolt amperes to 190MVA, ultimately bringing the capacity of the substation to 152MW. This increased capacity will enable more bulk electricity supply to be available to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, serving customers in Maryland, Anthony, Ikeja, Mile 12, Ojota, Ketu, Alausa, 7up, and surrounding areas.
“This project is part of the ongoing collaboration between TCN and FGN Power Ltd to improve bulk power transmission in Nigeria,” stated TCN. The initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s power sector, ensuring a more reliable and efficient supply of electricity to homes and businesses.
The commissioning of the new transformer is a major milestone in TCN’s efforts to modernize and expand its infrastructure, ultimately enhancing the overall performance of the Nigerian power grid. With this new facility in place, Nigerians can expect improved electricity supply and reduced outages, paving the way for economic growth and development.
