Nigeria’s Economic Woes: Traditional Ruler Calls for Open Borders and Quick Implementation of National Minimum Wage
The Eselu of Eselu kingdom in Yewa North local government area of Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has sounded the alarm on the crippling economic hardship facing Nigeria’s citizens. In a plea to the federal government, the traditional ruler urged the opening of all borders for the importation of goods to alleviate the suffering. According to Oba Akinyemi, the move is necessary to address the widespread hunger and poverty in the country.
The Eselu made the call during the inauguration of the new executive members of the Integrity Obas Forum, an organization dedicated to promoting transparency and accountability among traditional rulers. In his address, Oba Akinyemi advised the government to prioritize policies that would not jeopardize the country’s well-being. He also tasked the new executive members of the forum to uphold the values of integrity and accountability in their duties.
Regarding the implementation of the new National minimum wage, Oba Akintunde commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his efforts in holding meetings with labour leaders to ensure the prompt payment of the N70,000 minimum wage to state workers. He called on the federal government to expedite the implementation of the new salary structure for Nigerian workers.
Other prominent traditional rulers, including Oba Abdulgafar Tijani, Alawowo of Awowo, and Oba Adewunmi Odutala, the new president of the Integrity Obas Forum, also spoke during the event. They emphasized the importance of unity, focus, and transparency in the performance of duties. The forum also decorated some traditional rulers as patrons, including Oba Mufutau Adebayo Lawal, Onipe of Ipe, and Oba Najeemdeen Oladele Odugbemi, Olu of Lisa Kingdom.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic challenges, Oba Akintunde’s call for open borders and quick implementation of the National minimum wage has sparked widespread debate. While some may view the proposal as a potential solution to the country’s economic woes, others may raise concerns about the potential consequences of such a move. Nevertheless, the traditional ruler’s plea highlights the urgent need for concrete actions to address the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
