Sudan, IAEA Strengthen Food Security Ties

IAEA Affirms Support for Sudan in Food Security Efforts

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sudan in its efforts to achieve food security through the use of nuclear technologies. This announcement came during the opening ceremony of the Sudan Pavilion at the IAEA’s General Conference in Vienna, where the agency’s Deputy Director General, Dr. Najat Mukhtar, delivered a speech highlighting the agency’s support for Sudan.

Dr. Mukhtar praised the existing cooperation between Sudan and the IAEA, citing several successful projects and examples of the agency’s assistance in areas such as crop improvement, animal health, and food safety. She emphasized the agency’s continued response to Sudan’s needs, including capacity building and technical cooperation to support the country’s efforts to achieve food security.

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abu Bakr Omar Al-Bushra, also praised the partnership between Sudan and the IAEA, highlighting the agency’s support for the country’s agricultural sector. He noted that Sudan’s unique geographical location, fertile lands, and diverse climates make it an ideal location for the use of nuclear technologies to enhance agricultural productivity, ensure food safety, and manage natural resources effectively.

The Sudan Pavilion at the IAEA’s General Conference is organized in cooperation between the Sudanese Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (SNRRA) and the Permanent Mission of Sudan to the Agency. The pavilion will continue its work until next Friday, and will feature a scientific forum on the Atoms for Food Initiative, which aims to enhance the use of nuclear technologies in areas related to food security.

The IAEA’s support for Sudan’s food security efforts is a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to overcome food security challenges. With the agency’s assistance, Sudan is well-positioned to achieve its goals and contribute to food security in the region.
