The National Executive Council (NEC) of Nigeria’s Labour Party has formally dissolved the party’s caretaker committee, which was headed by Esther Nenadi Usman. In the same resolution, the council reaffirmed its full support for the National Working Committee (NWC) led by National Chairman Julius Abure.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by Alhaji Abdulrahim Chindo, Secretary of the NEC Forum. It followed a virtual meeting convened on March 17, 2026, which was attended by all duly elected state chairmen and secretaries. According to the statement, the NEC members present unanimously adopted several resolutions.
A key factor prompting the meeting was a recent publication in the Tribune newspaper on March 6, 2026, which discussed NEC procedures. The council determined that a virtual session was necessary to address urgent internal matters.
During its review, the NEC concluded that the caretaker committee’s operations since its formation had “caused significant harm to the party and were carried out unlawfully.” Based on this assessment, the council moved to dissolve the Nenadi Usman-led committee immediately.
The statement further clarified that the NEC’s support for the NWC, under Barrister Julius Abure, remains steadfast. The NWC was originally elected at the party’s National Convention on March 27, 2024, and its mandate was subsequently reaffirmed at an NEC meeting supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on November 28, 2025.
In a directive with direct implications for the party’s future, the NEC instructed National Chairman Julius Abure to formally notify INEC of the caretaker committee’s dissolution. This step is deemed necessary to facilitate the party’s preparations for its primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, ensuring compliance with the electoral commission’s timelines.
This resolution represents a decisive move by the Labour Party’s highest decision-making body to resolve internal leadership disputes and consolidate its structure ahead of the next electoral cycle. By endorsing the NWC and disbanding the rival caretaker committee, the NEC aims to present a unified front for the 2027 polls.
