Cryptocurrency Ban Hits Nigerian Hospital Staff

In a move to boost productivity and focus on patient care, the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe, Nigeria, has banned its staff from engaging in cryptocurrency mining and trading during work hours. The directive, issued on September 18, 2024, by Deputy Director of Administration Adamu Tela, aims to curb the growing distraction caused by cryptocurrency-related activities among employees.

According to a circular seen by Media Talk Africa, the hospital management has warned staff members to desist from mining and trading activities while working, citing the need for employees to focus on their duties. The ban follows a series of complaints from patients and their relatives, who expressed dissatisfaction with the distraction caused by staff members’ crypto activities during duty hours.

Tela warned that any staff member caught violating the directive will face sanctions, as outlined in the Public Service Rules. To ensure compliance, the hospital has deployed SERVICOM, ACTU, and security officers to monitor staff activities.

The ban comes amid growing interest in cryptocurrency among Nigerians, with platforms like Not Coin and Dawg gaining popularity for mining opportunities. However, this enthusiasm has led to concerns about its impact on workplace productivity.

The hospital’s decision is seen as a step towards maintaining a healthy work environment and prioritizing patient care. Staff members have been urged to focus on their responsibilities and perform their duties with diligence and seriousness.

The move is a significant one, as it sets a precedent for other organizations in Nigeria to consider the impact of cryptocurrency on workplace productivity. As the popularity of cryptocurrency continues to grow, it remains to be seen how other institutions will address the issue.
